Matthew graduated cum laude from Harvard University with high honors in economics, earned a master’s degree in economics with merit from the London School of Economics, and obtained his law degree from Columbia Law School. At Columbia, Matthew served as an editor of the prestigious Columbia Law Review and was one of only 12 graduates in a class of over 400 to achieve the distinction of James Kent Scholar, the highest single-year academic honors, all three years.

In addition to his academic achievements, Matthew has extensive experience across varied and demanding areas of law. After law school, he clerked for the United States Courts of Appeals for the Second and Fifth Circuits. During that time, Matthew worked on over 100 civil and criminal appeals, covering a broad spectrum of legal issues, including constitutional law, civil and criminal procedure, employment, immigration, disability, criminal sentencing, and statutory interpretation.

Today, Matthew practices at Ackerman & Ackerman P.C., where he primarily represents property owners whose land is taken by the government through eminent domain. His successful advocacy on behalf of property owners recently earned him recognition as a Super Lawyers 2024 Michigan Rising Star.

Matthew’s commitment to the law extends beyond his practice. He regularly publishes articles and speaks at national conferences on topics ranging from what should be included in “just compensation” in eminent domain cases to education assessment methodologies. Matthew also serves as an adjunct law professor at Michigan State University.
